お立ち寄り下さいまして ありがとう ございます。
"derelict" は ラテン語 "derelinquere"(遺棄する、
見捨てる) の過去分詞形 "derelictus" が英語に
入り、変化し "derelict" という形で定着して文献上
初見されたのは 1649年だそうです。
「所有者・保護者に遺棄・放棄された」という形容詞
ですが、
「人生の落伍者； 職も家もない浮浪者」
という名詞としても よく使われます。
ヒッチコック劇場の作品の中に "The Derelicts"
という そのものズバリの タイトルのものがあります。
ちょっと 覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「１年前に Alfred Sloane は 実業家の Ralph
Cowell に 金を貸した。
新製品開発と販売活動に 要る金だという。
Sloane は 貸金の見返りとして その新製品から
出る利益の半分を受け取ることになっていた。
そろそろ利益の分け前を呉れ、と Sloane から
催促がきた。
だが、Ralph は 出た利益を悉(ことごと)く 綺麗で
モノ欲しがりの妻のために使い尽くしていた。」
(A year ago, Alfred Sloane lent businessman Ralph Cowell
the money he needed to develop and market a new invention,
in return for 50% of the profits.
Now Sloane calls Ralph to ask for his share, but Ralph has
spent all of his earnings on his attractive, materialistic wife. )
「Sloane の督促が厳しくなったので Ralph は もう
借りた金を返す必要がないように 彼を公園に呼び
出して殺した。そして 自分が書いて Sloane に渡した
借用証書が入っていると思われる財布を持ち去った。
ところが、殺人現場を Peter Goodfellow という名の
浮浪者に目撃されてしまった。
Peter は 現場に落ちていた Sloane の煙草入れを
拾った。その煙草入れには 借用証書が入っていた。」
(When Sloane insists on payment, Ralph kills him in a park in
order to avoid paying what he owes and takes his wallet,
expecting to recover the IOU he had written.
But the murder is witnessed by a derelict named Peter Good-
fellow, who picks up Sloane's cigarette case with the IOU in
it. )
「Peter と 仲間の Fenton Shanks という男が
Ralph の処にやって来た。脅迫するためだ。
ふたりは Ralph の 高級アパートに上がり込み
人殺しは黙っておいてやるから 十分な金を用意
しろ、とRalph を脅した。
Ralph の妻 Herta は ふたりのことを ヘドが出る
ほどに嫌った。」
(Peter and his friend Fenton Shanks come to blackmail Ralph,
moving into Cowell's expensive apartment and demanding
heavy payment in return for their silence, much to the
disgust of Cowell's wife, Herta. )
「浮浪者の Peter と その仲間の Fenton のふたりは
Ralph の家に 一緒に住み込んで Ralph の 高価な
持ち物を ほとんど全て 質入れしてしまった。
そうこうしている内に、Ralph は なんとか 借用証書を
見つけ出し 焼却した。
やっとこさで Ralph は 状況を逆転できる立場に立った
ー と、彼自身は そう 思った。
そして すぐさま 浮浪者のふたりを家から叩き出した。」
(After months of Goodfellow and Fenton living with them and
hocking almost all of his valuable belongings in the Cowell
home, Cowell manages to find and retrieve the IOU and
burn it.
Ultimately, Cowell gains the upper hand in the situation --
or so he thinks.
He immediately evicts the bums. )
「ところが、ふたりを叩き出して間もなく、警察が
やって来た。
警察は ふたりの浮浪者たちが質入れした品物の
質札の束を持っていた。
浮浪者たちが質入れした品物は すべて わたしの
持ち物だ、と Ralph は 警察に言った。
浮浪者たちが質入れした品物の中に、殺した Sloane
の 煙草入れが含まれていることに気付いたのだが、
もう 遅かった。
その Sloane の煙草入れと Ralph とが繋がり、いずれ
警察が Sloane 殺しは Ralph だと気付くのは時間の
問題だ、と Ralph は 観念した。」
But soon afterward the police arrive. They have a bunch
of pawn tickets cashed in by the derelicts. Ralph tells the
police that the stolen merchandise belongs to him.
He realizes too late that Goodfellow also pawned a cigarette
case that belonged to his murdered creditor.
Cowell realizes that it is only a matter of time before the
police figure this out and discover that he is the murderer,
tying him to the Sloane's cigarette case.)
