英文を書くときに、もっと言葉の種類が必要だなぁと思うことが増えてきています。
ボキャブラリーのメンテは定期的とまではいかなくても、気付いたときにやっておくのは大事なこと。
今回は、「おいしい」という英単語の勉強をすることにしました。
料理英語の好きな私は、フェイスブックで
Tasty などの英語の料理サイトをよく見るのですが、
普段耳にする、目にするのは、せいぜい
Good!
Yummy!
Delicious!
Tasty!
のような気がするのですが…
「おいしい」という意味の単語が14個出てきます。
delicious
tasty
juicy
savory
luscious,yummy
appetizing, mouth-watering
delectable
palatable, scrumptious
scrummy
succulent, ambrosial
せっかく、これだけのものを学ぶ機会があるのだから、意味を分かった上で使い分けられるようになりたいものです。
たとえば、
delectableとpalatableはどう違うの？
(Oxford Living Dictionariesで調べました。)
delectable
1(of food or drink) delicious.
‘delectable handmade chocolates’
palatable
1(of food or drink) pleasant to taste.
‘a very palatable local red wine’
どちらもほとんど意味は同じような？？
さらに調べてみると、palatableについてこういう説明が見つかりました。
(Dictionary.comで調べました。)
"Palatable has the least positiveconnotation of these terms, often referring to food that is merely acceptable and not especiallygood: a palatable, if undistinguished, maincourse; a barely palatable mixture of overcookedvegetables.”
この説明を読むと、
palatableは「おいしい」のグループで、ポジティブな意味が一番少ない単語で
「単に受け入れられるレベル、とくにおいしいというわけではない」食べ物について言うことが多い
とあります
そうそう、こういうことが知りたかったのです！!
英和辞典で調べると、
たいていは「口に合う、おいしい」
英英辞典ですら(上で取り上げたように)、
(of food or drink) pleasant to taste
やはり「口に合う」
辞書で調べてわかることには限界があるというのも、なんだか、もどかしくも感じます。
実は上のDictionary. comの説明には、続きがあって、ほかの「おいしい」の仲間の説明も詳しくされていて、他の辞書とは少し違いました。
appetizing は匂いや味で食欲を刺激される、見た目で美味しそうという場合に使われ、tasty はとにかく味が良い場合、savoryは調味料などで味がついた食べ物(ニンニク風味のローストビーフなど)の場合で、匂いと味にひきつけられるような時に使われるとか。
そうそう、こういうことが知りたかった笑

今回は「おいしい」という意味の英単語のほんの一部の意味を調べたに過ぎないのですが(残念ながら、delectableについては、ここまで調べられませんでした)、また、たまには時間をかけて、こんなふうに納得できるまで単語の意味を調べたいなぁと思った次第です。
(英語には勉強することがたくさんあって、時間配分は常に悩みのタネですが。)
本当は料理サイトで最近よく見かけるmesmerizing という単語についても書きたかったのですが、長くなりましたので、機会を改めます。
