ニューヨーク州に隣接するニュージャージー州のさらに先にあるのがペンシルバニア州。
順調に行けば車で２時間半ほどの距離である。
大きな病院や大学街はあるけれど、あとはお決まりの美術館と博物館ぐらい。
州の中心地フィラデルフィアから少し離れると、アレンタウンのような工場地が広がる。
私もかつて留学時代に、先輩夫婦の車に乗せてもらって、観光をしたことがあったけれど、
あとは千璃の病院以外、足を伸ばしたことがほとんどなかった。
次女がオリエンテーションに行っている間に、少し街を歩き、フィラデルフィア美術館へ。
ニューヨークのメトロポリタン美術館ほど混んでもいないし、30万点に及ぶ所蔵品は見応え十分。
米国各地の美術館に行くたびに「アメリカは金持ってるな」と感想を述べていた父の言葉が蘇る。
特に印象派からシュールレアリズムまで、近現代作品のコレクションには圧倒された。
映画「ロッキー」でシルヴェスター・スターローンがトレーニングを詰んだ階段があり、
美術館には入らず「ロッキー階段」と「ロッキー像」で記念撮影をする人が多いのも面白い。
米国独立の調印がされた「アメリカ合衆国誕生の地」でもあるフィラデルフィアで、
独立記念館、自由の鐘など、アメリカの歴史を辿るのもおすすめです。
Beyond New Jersey, which borders New York State, lies Pennsylvania.
It’s about a two-and-a-half-hour drive if the traffic is good.
There are large hospitals and university towns, but other than that, there are just the usual art galleries and museums.
Once you get a little away from Philadelphia, the state’s capital, industrial areas like Allentown stretch out.
I once went sightseeing there during my study abroad days, riding in the car of a senior student and his wife,
but other than Seriri’s hospital, I’ve hardly ever ventured out of the area.
While my second daughter was at orientation, I took a short walk around town and visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
It’s not as crowded as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and its collection of 300,000 works is well worth seeing.
I’m reminded of my father’s words, which he would often say whenever we visited museums across the U.S.: “America sure has a lot of money.”
I was particularly overwhelmed by the collection of modern and contemporary works, ranging from Impressionism to Surrealism.
There are the steps where Sylvester Stallone trained in the movie *Rocky*,
and it’s interesting to see so many people taking commemorative photos at the “Rocky Steps” and the “Rocky statue” without even entering the museum.
In Philadelphia, the “Birthplace of the United States” where the Declaration of Independence was signed,
I also recommend tracing American history by visiting the Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.
