この冬の寒さですっかり引きこもりの私だけれど、
マンハッタンの街は今一年で最高に華やいだ季節を迎えている。
今年のロックフェラーセンターのツリーは、高さ約23メートル、重さ11トン。
11月上旬にニューヨークの州都オールバニ近郊から、樹齢75年のノルウェーモミの木が運ばれた。
12月3日の点灯式。
５万個のLEDライトが灯り、最上部の星には３万個以上のスワロフスキー。
ただただ、圧巻。
空気まで凍えるような氷点下の街だからこそ、この美しさが際立っている。
1931年に世界恐慌で沈んだ国民を励ます希望の象徴として最初のツリーが飾られた。
1933年から正式伝統行事となり、ツリーは米国内の一般家庭から寄付され、
ホリデーシーズンが終了すると、ツリーは建築資材として再利用される。
「ハビタット・フォー・ヒューマニティ」という団体などが、その木材を利用して家を建て、
手頃な価格で家を必要とする人たちに提供されるのだ。
ロックフェラーセンターのツリーは、単なる飾りものではなく、
希望と再利用の精神を体現する存在。
そういうことを知ると、ますますこの街の懐の深さを思わずにはいられない。

The lighting ceremony took place on December 3rd.

It's precisely because the city is frozen in sub-zero temperatures that this beauty stands out so strikingly.
The first tree was decorated in 1931 as a symbol of hope to encourage citizens devastated by the Great Depression.
It became an official tradition in 1933.
Trees are donated by ordinary households across the United States,
and after the holiday season ends, the trees are reused as construction material.
Organizations like Habitat for Humanity use this wood to build homes,
providing affordable housing for those in need.
The Rockefeller Center tree is more than just a decoration.
It embodies the spirit of hope and reuse.
